A Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
Ephesians 1:17–18 (ESV)
Scripture
Ephesians 1:17–18 (ESV)
Reflection
Paul is praying for something specific on behalf of the people he is writing to. Not comfort. Not safety. Not success.
Wisdom. Revelation. Enlightened eyes.
The language of verse eighteen is worth sitting with. The eyes of the heart. This is not cognitive clarity produced by gathering enough information. It is a different kind of seeing, one that perceives what cannot be accessed through observation alone.
Leaders need both kinds. The kind that comes from experience, study, and careful attention to what is in front of them. And the kind that perceives what is true about their calling, their purpose, and the people they are responsible for, things that are not visible on the surface.
The clarity Paul prays for here is not about strategy. It is about knowing what you have been called to and what that calling is worth.
A leader who knows that moves differently. They are not easily distracted by comparison, not easily derailed by opposition, not easily confused by the noise that surrounds every significant endeavor.
That kind of clarity is a gift. It is also something Paul believed was worth asking for.
Practical Application
- Pray specifically for wisdom and revelation, not just for good outcomes.
- Identify where the eyes of your heart need to be enlightened rather than just your mind informed.
- Let clarity of calling shape how you respond to the pressures in front of you.
Takeaways
- There is a kind of clarity that comes from enlightened perception, not just informed analysis.
- Knowing what you have been called to produces a stability that circumstances cannot easily disrupt.
Closing Thought
A leader who knows what they are called to is harder to move off course than one who is only clear about what they are doing.
