Bless and Do Not Curse

Reflection

Paul is not describing a communication style. He is describing a posture that is only possible when the internal condition of the leader has been formed in a particular direction.

Blessing those who persecute is not a natural response. It requires something to be present in the speaker that is not produced by circumstances or by effort alone. A leader whose default response to opposition is to return it in kind is not simply making a communication error. They are revealing what is actually present underneath.

Verse fifteen grounds the same principle in the emotional register. Rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep is not about performing the appropriate response for a given situation. It is about actually being present with the people you lead in a way that allows their experience to matter to you.

Leaders who communicate from this posture are doing something that technique cannot replicate. They are demonstrating that the person in front of them is worth full engagement, not management. That their joy matters enough to celebrate and their grief matters enough to sit with.

Communication at this level is what builds the kind of loyalty that survives difficulty. Not because the leader performed it well, but because the people on the receiving end experienced something genuine.
