I Am Innocent of the Blood of All

Reflection

Paul says this knowing he will never see these people again. There is no future performance review coming, no chance to correct course later, no opportunity to fill in what he left out. Whatever account he can give of his time with the Ephesian elders, he has to give now, in full, because this is the only chance he will have.

That urgency clarifies what accountability to those you lead is actually for. Paul's claim to innocence does not rest on good intentions or a sincere heart. It rests on a specific, verifiable fact: he did not shrink from declaring the whole counsel of God. Not a convenient portion. Not the parts that were easy to say. All of it, to everyone, for as long as he had access to them.

This week has moved through several dimensions of accountability to those a leader is given: tending to real needs rather than feeding on the position, staying engaged with people beyond formal authority, matching public leadership to private example, refusing the excuse of claimed ignorance, leading by example rather than domination, and inviting honest scrutiny of one's own heart. This closing passage adds the piece that gathers the rest together. All of it has to be done while there is still time, because the moment eventually comes, as it did for Paul, when the opportunity closes.

Servant leadership does not assume there will always be another chance to say the hard thing, tend to the overlooked person, or close the gap between example and instruction. Paul's innocence is not a claim about his character in the abstract. It is a claim about what he actually did with the specific time he had with specific people. A leader who can say the same, that they did not shrink from what needed to be said or done while they still had the chance, has met the accountability this whole week has been describing.
