Our Secret Sins in the Light

Reflection

Moses writes this psalm near the end of a life spent leading people who resisted him constantly. He knows what it is to carry decisions no one else saw him make.

The verse does not describe a future exposure. It describes a present condition. The secret sins are already in the light of God's presence. Accountability for a leader's private decisions does not wait for a public moment. It is already in effect.

This is uncomfortable for a reason. Leaders operate with more unseen latitude than almost anyone else in an organization. Fewer people are positioned to question a leader's choices in the moment they are made. That latitude can become a private category of decisions a leader assumes will never be accountable to anyone.

Servant leadership does not rely on the assumption of privacy to behave well. Accountability that only holds when someone is watching is not accountability. It is performance. Assuming every decision is already known, seen or unseen, changes what a leader is willing to do when no one else is positioned to ask.

The leaders who hold up over time are rarely the ones who never had a hidden option available. They are the ones who stopped believing hidden options were exempt from accountability.

• Identify one decision you have made recently that you assumed no one would examine closely.
• Evaluate it as though it were already visible to everyone you lead.
• Adjust anything that only survives scrutiny because it has avoided it so far.
