Strangers and Sojourners

Reflection

Every leader is temporary. The role existed before them, and someone else will fill it after them. Most leaders know that in the abstract. Far fewer make decisions as if it were true.

The land could be lived on and worked, but it could not be sold in perpetuity. Nothing permanent could be traded away, because the land belonged to the LORD, and the people living on it were strangers and sojourners with him. They had real use of it. They did not have the final say over its future.

A sojourner leads differently than someone who assumes they will stay forever. They hold their position loosely enough to remember it will pass to someone else. They are cautious with decisions that can never be undone. They notice when a short-term gain would permanently cost the people who come next.

Leaders sell in perpetuity more often than they realize. A reputation burned for one quarter's results. A key relationship spent to win one argument. A team's trust traded for a deadline. Each one feels like an ordinary tradeoff in the moment. Many of them are permanent, and the leader who made them will not be the one living with the consequences.

Stewardship includes the future of what a leader holds, not only its present condition. The land is mine is a reminder that every tenure is borrowed time on someone else's ground. A leader who understands that tends to leave the place in better shape for whoever arrives next.

Practical Application

  • Name one decision in front of you that could never be undone, and slow it down.
  • Identify something you're tempted to spend now that the next leader will need.
  • Make one decision today as if your successor will inherit the result, because they will.

Takeaways

  • Every leadership role is temporary, and stewardship includes what happens after it passes on.
  • A short-term gain that can never be undone is a way of selling what was never yours.

Closing Thought

A sojourner remembers that someone else will live here next.
