Reflection
Leaders lose things. A role gets eliminated. A company changes hands. A trusted team member leaves. A project years in the making gets cancelled in a single meeting. The question in those moments is not whether it hurts. It is what the leader believes they lost.
Job does not pretend. The torn robe and the shaved head are grief in full view, and worship happens in the same moment rather than after the grief has been resolved. The sentence he speaks holds the gift and the loss together without choosing between them.
That sentence only makes sense to someone who understood what they had as given. An owner who loses something has been robbed. A steward who loses something has had it called back. The pain can be identical. The posture is entirely different, and so is everything that comes after.
Leaders who hold everything as owned tend to handle loss badly. They fight to keep what is already gone. They treat the people who made the decision as enemies. Sometimes they take it out on their own teams for a loss none of them caused. Stewardship does not remove the grief, but it removes the claim that something was stolen.
Naked I came, and naked shall I return is honest about the shape of every leadership role. Nothing a leader holds arrived with them, and nothing will leave with them. The open hand that received it is the same hand that has to release it, and a leader who knows that can grieve a loss and still bless the one who gave.
Practical Application
- Name something you lost in your leadership that you still hold as stolen rather than called back.
- Grieve it honestly, without pretending it didn't matter.
- Notice whether that loss is still shaping how you treat the people around you.
Takeaways
- Stewardship doesn't remove grief over loss, but it removes the claim that something was stolen.
- Nothing a leader holds arrived with them, and nothing will leave with them.
Closing Thought
The hand that received it is the same hand that has to let it go.
