The Might of My Hand

Reflection
Success rewrites memory. After a leader has built something, the story of how it happened gets shorter and more personal with every retelling. The early help fades. Luck gets renamed as strategy. The people who carried the hardest parts slowly drop out of the account.
The warning is aimed at a sentence spoken in the heart, not out loud. My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this. Few leaders would ever say it in a meeting. Many of them believe it anyway, and it shows in how they handle what they have.
The correction goes further than sharing credit with others. Even the power to get wealth was given. The capacity, the energy, the judgment, and the openings to use them all came from somewhere. A leader who believes they generated all of it alone will eventually treat the results as theirs to spend however they like.
That is where stewardship quietly breaks down. Usually not through theft or open abuse, but through a gradual shift in how a leader explains their own success. Once the explanation becomes self-made, resources begin serving the leader instead of the purpose they were given for. The gift was always tied to something larger than the one who received it.
Remembering is a discipline. A leader who deliberately retells the real story, the help received, the doors opened, the ability itself as a gift, keeps their grip loose enough to use what they have for what it was meant to do.
Practical Application
- Write down the real story of one success, including everyone and everything you didn't provide.
- Notice the sentence you tell yourself about why you've done well, and test it against this passage.
- Name one resource you've started treating as yours to spend rather than entrusted for a purpose.
Takeaways
- The danger isn't only claiming credit out loud. It's believing the self-made story in private.
- Even the ability to produce results was given, which ties the results to a purpose beyond the leader.
Closing Thought
The story a leader tells about their success decides what they will do with it.
