Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do

Ecclesiastes 9:10 (ESV)

Scripture

Ecclesiastes 9:10 (ESV)

Reflection

Leaders hold back more often than they admit. The current role is temporary. The project is not the one they wanted. The real work starts after this phase, once the right title or the right team is in place. Effort gets rationed for the assignment that feels worthy of it.

This verse takes that option away. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Not the work that was hoped for. The work actually in front of a person, done with everything they have.

The reason given is time, not virtue. There is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going. The window for doing anything at all is open now and will close. Rationed effort quietly assumes a later that may never arrive.

Stewardship of time is not only about scheduling. It is about intensity. A leader can spend a year in a role while barely being present in it, and the calendar will still show the year as full, even though nothing was built in it.

With your might is an uncomfortable standard for work a leader considers beneath them. The verse draws no line between worthy and unworthy assignments. The only line it draws is between what can be done now and what cannot be done at all.

Practical Application

  • Name the work you are currently doing at half effort because it is not the role you want.
  • Do the next piece of it with your full attention and watch what changes.
  • Stop describing the real work as something that begins later.

Takeaways

  • The reason for wholehearted work here is the closing window, not the worthiness of the task.
  • A calendar can show a full year while nothing was actually built in it.

Closing Thought

The window for doing anything at all is the one that is open now.
