When It Is in Your Power

Proverbs 3:27 (ESV)

Scripture

Proverbs 3:27 (ESV)

Reflection

Two conditions make this binding. The good is due to someone, and the power to give it sits in your hand. When both are true, withholding is the thing being named.

Due is a strong word. It is not describing a favor or a kindness beyond obligation. Something is owed, and the person who can deliver it is the one holding it.

Leaders hold back good for reasons that sound responsible. Waiting for a better moment. Not wanting to set a precedent. Keeping leverage for a negotiation that may never arrive. The raise that could be approved now gets deferred. The recommendation that would open a door stays unwritten. The credit that belongs to someone else waits in a drawer until it is useful.

Stewardship of people gets tested most clearly when a leader has the power to help and nothing is forcing the issue. This proverb removes the usual excuse by naming the power itself as what creates the obligation.

When it is in your power to do it is a short phrase that reorders a great many leadership decisions. The question stops being whether the good thing is convenient to give. It becomes whether it is owed and whether you can.

Practical Application

  • Name one good thing you are withholding that is owed rather than optional.
  • Deliver it without waiting for a better moment.
  • Notice where you are keeping leverage you have no real plan to use.

Takeaways

  • Having the power to give is what creates the obligation in this proverb.
  • Good withheld for a better moment is still withheld.

Closing Thought

It was owed, and the power to give it was already in hand.
