Work It and Keep It

Reflection
The first assignment given to a human being was not a title. It was a job with two parts. Work it and keep it. Before there was a team to lead or an organization to run, there was a garden, and a man placed inside it with a responsibility attached. That is where stewardship begins, and it is still where every leader's work begins.
The two verbs pull in different directions. To work something is to develop it, to make it produce more than it did before. To keep something is to guard it, to protect it from harm and from neglect. Most leaders lean naturally toward one and quietly let the other go. Some build hard and wear out what they were given. Others protect so carefully that nothing grows.
A leader who only works it treats people as fuel. Growth becomes the only measure, and whatever gets used up along the way is written off as the cost of progress. A leader who only keeps it treats the organization like a museum. Nothing is lost. Nothing is gained either. Stewardship refuses both. It asks for development and protection at the same time, from the same person, over the same ground.
The man in this verse did not wander into the garden and decide to stay. The LORD God took him and put him there. That changes how a leader holds a role. You did not simply arrive at the place you lead. You were placed there, and the placement came with a purpose that was defined before you showed up.
September spent a month on what a leader extends to people who have not earned it. Stewardship picks up the question that follows. If so much of what a leader holds was given rather than earned, the question is no longer what a leader deserves. It is what a leader will do with what was placed in their hands, for as long as they are the one standing in the garden.
Practical Application
- Name the part of your responsibility you tend to work hard and the part you tend to only keep.
- Identify one thing under your care that is being used up faster than it is being protected.
- Identify one thing you have protected so carefully that it has stopped growing.
Takeaways
- Stewardship holds two responsibilities at once: develop what was entrusted, and protect it.
- A leader did not simply arrive in their role. They were placed there, and the placement carries a purpose.
Closing Thought
The first job ever given was to make something better without using it up.
